The Louisiana College Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) is one of the largest department on campus, offering students a variety of majors along with the personal instruction associated with Louisiana College.
Students choosing to study in the Department of Health and Physical Education have several career paths to consider when selecting a major. Majors and degrees offered within the Department include: Health and Wellness Education with teacher certification, Fitness and Wellness, Adapted Physical Education with teacher certification, Athletic Training, and Health and Physical Education without teacher certification.
The Athletic Training program is working in partnership with the American Council on Exercise to offer the ACE advanced certification to our students.
Placing students in professional settings where they may learn specifics of their field is an important aspect of the HPE curriculum. All Fitness and Wellness majors complete internships at cardiac rehab facilities in the area, and students selecting majors with teacher certification will complete student teaching semesters in local schools. Athletic training majors have the opportunity to work with the Louisiana College athletic teams as well as in local agencies.
Students are encouraged to get involved in extracurricular learning organizations on campus. The Physical Education Majors Club (PEM) is open to all majors within the Department. The Iota Tau Alpha honor society is open to qualified athletic training majors.
Any program of study is best represented by its alumni. Dr. Kristi Menear, class of 1993, is an excellent example of that. She is an assistant professor of Physical Education Pedagogy and Adapted Physical Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Graduate School.
