2000 Distinguished Alumni

Four Louisiana College alumni have been selected to receive the Louisiana College Distinguished Alumni Award during LC's annual Homecoming Celebration October 26-28, according to Byron McGee, Dean of Admissions and Alumni Affairs.

The four recipients are: Dr. Thomas Arnold, Kenneth Lesley, Edward "Butch" Morrison, and Betty Carter Stokeld.

Recipients are chosen by the Alumni Association Executive Committee at their fall meeting. Those honored are selected according to the following standards: 1) a graduate of LC, 2) of good character, 3) respected and honored by peers and associates, 4) made significant contributions to profession, church and community, and 5) loyal to Louisiana College.

McGee says, "We couldn't have asked for a group that better exemplifies the standards established for this award. These are people who made the most of their education and who have been supporters of their alma mater. We are proud to recognize these alumni."


Arnold is a 1983 graduate of LC and is currently serving as the Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and is Medical Director of the Section of Clinical Toxicology at the LSU Health Services Center in Shreveport.

He became one of the first physicians in the state to obtain sub-specialty board certification in Medical Toxicology and is currently the only emergency physician in the state boarded in that sub-specialty.


Lesley is retired from Burlington Industries, Inc., where he worked from 1968 until 1995. At Burlington, Lesley held several positions within the company, including Division Personnel Manager, Area Personnel Executive, and Vice President of Human Resources and Public Relations.

The Greensboro, NC, resident is currently a member of the Greensboro Rotary Club and of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Urban Ministry.


Morrison is a Central Louisiana native and has been involved in the community for years. Owner and operator of Adams Pest Control and Morrison Environmental Services, he is a past president of the Louisiana Pest Control Association.

He is a member and past president of the Louisiana College Wildcat Athletic Association and a member and past chairman of the deacons at First Baptist Church in Pineville.


Stokeld is a resident of Baton Rouge and an "I Care Specialist" with the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Program of the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board. She is a member of the Melrose Civic Association Board and the Advisory Council of the Louisiana Moral and Civic Foundation.

She has served as a member of the LC Board of Trustees and on the Louisiana Baptist Convention's Committee on Moral and Social Concerns.

The award recipients will be presented to the Louisiana College student body October 26, 2000 at 10:50 a.m. in the weekly chapel service in Guinn Auditorium. The recipients will also be honored during the Annual Alumni Luncheon October 28 at 11 a.m. in the Hixson Student Center. Each recipient will have the opportunity to share a few words with their audiences during both events.
