2004 Distinguished Alumni
Two Louisiana College alumnae have been chosen to receive the Louisiana College Distinguished Alumni award during this year’s annual Homecoming celebration scheduled for October 14-16, according to Byron McGee, director of enrollment management and alumni affairs.
The two alumnae chosen to receive this award are Mary Ann Shallberg of Houston, Texas, and Lori Thames of Pineville.
Recipients are chosen by the Alumni Association Executive Committee at their fall meeting. Those honored are selected according to the following standards: 1) a graduate of Louisiana College, 2) of good character, 3) respected and honored by peers and associates, 4) made significant contributions to profession, church, and community, and 5) loyal to Louisiana College.
Shallberg is a 1964 graduate who is a Louisiana College legacy. Her father, Carl Houston Harris, a 1934 Louisiana College graduate, served as a member of the Louisiana College Board of Trustees, and her aunt, Dixie Sylvest Moss, has long been a supporter of the College. Her sister, Pauline Harris Abbott, graduated in 1966, two years after Mary Ann.
Currently, Mrs. Shallberg serves as Executive Associate to the President of the University of Houston at Clear Lake. She has worked at UH-Clear Lake since 1980 and has served each of the University’s four presidents. She has been honored with the UHCL President’s Distinguished Staff Service Award.
She has been involved for years with the Lunar Rendezvous Festival, which provides scholarship support to area students, and has been involved with the Bay Area Houston Ballet and Theater. She also helped start a new professional association for presidential assistants in higher education. The organization is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and meets annually in conjunction with the American Council on Education.
She was named one of the Bay Area Turning Point’s 2004 Men and Women of Heart, a special designation in recognition of the work she has done as a community volunteer. Mrs. Shallberg is a devoted supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
A member of University Baptist Church, she has been an active supporter of the church’s programs and has been a member of the choir for 16 years.
Mrs. Shallberg is married to Bill Shallberg.
Thames is a 1985 alumna whose devotion to the school has been shown in every aspect of her life. A 1985 graduate of Louisiana College, Ms. Thames received her Master of Arts degree from Northwesten State University in 1991 in Student Personnel Services.
She has held several positions at her alma mater since her graduation, always working closely with students, most recently as Dean of Students. Currently, she is the interim vice president for student life. She began her tenure in 1985 as a co-manager of Cottingham Hall and assistant women’s basketball coach.
She has extensive experience in recruiting, fund raising, organizing, planning, administering, and implementing programs. Few areas of the College have not benefited from her talents. Students respect both her authority and dedication to doing the right thing.
Ms. Thames is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the Council for Advancement and Support Education, the Louisiana Association of College and University Student Personnel Administrators, the Baptist Association for Student Affairs, the National Association of Female Executives, and the Association of Student Judicial Affairs.
She is a member of First Baptist Church in Pineville where she has taught Sunday School and served on various committees, including the Finance and Activities committee.
Shallberg and Thames will be presented to the Louisiana College campus community on October 14, 2004 at 10:50 a.m. in the annual Homecoming chapel service held in Guinn Auditorium. They will each have the opportunity to address those gathered together. They will also be recognized at the October 15 Homecoming Celebration Dinner at 6 p.m. in the Granberry Conference Center.
