Tommy & Katie Smith
We choose to give because of what Louisiana College gave us.
Tommy and Katie Smith met at Louisiana College in the fall of 1953. Tommy received a football scholarship and Katie worked in the dining hall (the best pay on campus). Both were graduates of small high schools and their parents wanted them to attend a small college with a history of academic excellence.
Both have wonderful memories of their time at LC. Katie was elected LC Sweetheart in 1954 and Tommy had long, tough football practices with Coach Devon Payne along with the other 32 Wildcats.
Tommy and Katie graduated with majors in teacher education and have spent the last 35 – 40 years in teaching, coaching, supervision and administration in the Rapides Parish School System. “We have helped in the training and mentoring of student teachers from LC and that was one of the most rewarding experiences, seeing the education students mature into excellent teachers,” explained Katie.
The Smiths believe in education, Katie explains, “There was no price too high for us to pay for our education at Louisiana College. The school prepared us to teach, to love our work and to make the world a better place.” Over the last several years Tommy has given graciously to athletics. “We want to help the next generation of students by giving back to LC,” said Katie. “When our will is executed a portion of it is allocated to Louisiana College for the purpose of establishing the Tommy G. and Katie S. Smith Scholarship in Teaching.”
