Student Government Association

SGA Louisiana CollegeWhat is LC SGA?

The Student Government Association (SGA) represents student views and concerns to the faculty and the administration. Governmental leaders participate in policy-making, the judiciary system, institutional planning, and implementation of College programs. An SGA representative usually attends meetings of the Louisiana College faculty.

All social, academic, and honorary organizations are governed through the SGA under the supervision of the Presidents' Table. Chaired by the Vice President of the SGA, the Presidents' Table consists of all organizational presidents and serves as a coordinating body for organizational activities and Rush. The group meets monthly to plan campus-wide organizational activities and to provide input into policies governing organizations.

The SGA elects executive officers and representatives in a campus-wide election each spring semester. Freshmen Representatives are selected in a special election held each fall. Any full-time student with a minimum grade point average of 2.00 is eligible for membership. Certain offices may require more specific criteria. Consult the SGA Constitution for detailed information. Scholarships are sometimes available for elected SGA leaders. For more information or a copy of the SGA Constitution, call the SGA Office or Student Development.

How to get involved?
Students are encouraged to participate in campus life in addition to pursing their university studies. SGA hosts weekly meetings, and students may attend to watch or to participate in discussions. SGA urges students to bring opinions, needs, and questions before the SGA board, either outside of the weekly meetings or by reserving a spot on the meeting agenda with the SGA President.

If you have a concern about an aspect of campus life, if you want to make a suggestion, if you want to congratulate or commend someone on campus (e.g., a professor, staff member, student, administration, or community figure), or if you want to request funds for an organization or campus activity, contact the SGA President or Student Development to reserve a spot on the meeting agenda.

Get involved with your campus! You are a client of this university and its central focus. SGA strives to represent all students before the faculty, staff, and administration; yet, at times, certain issues, whether positive or negative, escape SGA’s notice. Please let us know what we can do to better serve you. Together, we can continue to make Louisiana College a great place to learn and live.

If you want to take your campus involvement to the next level, run for a SGA board position, SGA President, or SGA Vice-President. Each classification—freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior—has three delegate positions, with the person receiving the most votes automatically becoming class president. Two Delegate-at-large and two Commuter Representative positions are also open each year. The LC SGA Constitution outlines the qualifications for each office position; the LC SGA Constitution which available in either Student Development or in the SGA Office.

A Message from the Student Body President
Serving as Louisiana College’s student body President is an immense honor and responsibility. I seek to be a good steward of the funds and powers associated with this humbling position by striving to execute logically and selflessly the duties entrusted to me. I thank you Louisiana College, and look forward to serving you.

Last year, Dr. Pack, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and LC SGA Faculty Advisor, and the SGA Board sought to restructure and formalize further SGA through parliamentary training, attending the National ASGA Washington Conference, donating funds to numerous campus organizations and students, and establishing a line-item budget.

In sum, SGA achieved a more efficient and transparent governance while also promoting its services to students. An example is the SGA, Information Technology Forum held last Fall in response to students’ urging. This year, the SGA Board seeks to continue such positive growth, a trend apparent for several years here at Louisiana College.

The 2010-2011 board members represent numerous majors and academic divisions on campus. Such a diverse group of individuals, their extensive involvement on campus outside of SGA, and a unique combination of academic specializations assures me that all matters brought before SGA this year will be adequately and ethically addressed.

I implore students to utilize this excellent resource to discuss campus life in all its facets by consulting their peer representatives who were elected to serve Louisiana College. Every Louisiana College student is part of SGA. We are living and learning in a dynamic, Christian environment that is experiencing tremendous growth and development. Get involved!

As LC SGA strives to become a more integral part of college life, we also encourage students to make the most of their time here at Louisiana College. Again, I thank you for this opportunity to serve you, and humbly ask for personal and prayerful guidance for myself and all SGA board members. I wish you all much success this school year!

Sincerely,
Mason Hess
