The Louisiana College Epsilon Xi chapter of Sigma Tau Delta has partnered with Better World Books to participate in a book drive to increase literacy rates worldwide and to provide campuses with an environmentally responsible outlet for books.
Last academic year, over 50 Sigma Tau Delta chapters collected nearly 50,000 books from campus book drives and raised over 10 million dollars for non-profit literacy initiatives and libraries worldwide.
The collected books are shipped to the BWB warehouse and are listed for resell on over twenty online marketplaces. Every book that sells funds a non-profit partner of the chapter’s choice. Unsellable books are donated to a literacy partner or recycled.
President Haley Laird and Vice President Paige Jordan announced that LC’s Sigma Tau Delta has designated the National Center for Family Literacy as its literacy partner. Since 1989, this organization has helped more than 1 million families make educational and economic progress by pioneering and improving family literacy programs.
According to NCFL, research shows that home and community are the true drivers of a child’s education. Children’s reading scores dramatically improve when parents are involved in helping them learn to read.
Because literacy is essential in today’s economy, Sigma Tau Delta alongside Better World Books and the National Council Family Literacy are building a bridge to ensure that the cycle of learning and progress passes from generation to generation.
Please donate your used textbooks and other used books to assist in this important cause. Book bins are located in the Louisiana College Student Center.
